As of May 3, 2024, Canada officially replaced the GED with the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC)—a Canadian-made high school equivalency exam now used in most provinces and territories.
However, Quebec has NOT implemented the CAEC exam. The information below is based on how GED testing used to work in Quebec and what may apply if the province adopts the CAEC in the future.
GED Replaced by CAEC – But Not in Quebec
While the CAEC is now Canada’s official high school equivalency test, Quebec has not joined the program. GED testing in Quebec ended as it did elsewhere, but no replacement has been announced yet.
If Quebec decides to implement the CAEC, it’s likely the process will mirror how the GED worked in the province:
-
Residents were required to be at least 16 years old

-
16-year-olds needed to meet additional eligibility requirements
-
Test-takers had to be Canadian citizens or have lived in Quebec for at least 6 months
-
The exam was only available in paper format (no computer-based testing)
-
The GED cost $35 per test or $175 for all five tests
Will Quebec Offer CAEC in the Future?
There is no confirmation yet on whether Quebec will offer the CAEC. However, if introduced, it’s expected that:
-
The costs and eligibility requirements will be similar to those of the former GED
-
The CAEC will be offered in French and English
-
It may remain paper-based, unless new systems are implemented
-
No prep course or practice test may be required before registration, as with the GED
What Is the CAEC Test?
The CAEC (Canadian Adult Education Credential) is a modular exam made up of five subject tests:
-
Language Arts Reading
-
Language Arts Writing
-
Mathematics
-
Science
-
Social Studies
Each subtest is designed to assess a candidate’s high school-level knowledge and thinking skills, including reading comprehension, essay writing, problem-solving, and critical analysis.
Preparing for the CAEC (Even if Quebec Doesn’t Offer It Yet)
Even though the CAEC is not currently available in Quebec, many adult learners still choose to start preparing in advance, especially if they plan to move to another province or if Quebec introduces the test later.
One of the most effective ways to study is with Cansego’s online CAEC prep program, which includes:
-
Short video lessons that cover every CAEC topic
-
Practice tests that help you build test-taking strategies
-
A flexible, self-paced structure you can follow from anywhere
-
Content that’s fully aligned with the current CAEC test
Cansego does not offer the CAEC exam, but it’s a trusted provider of Canadian high school equivalency prep.
Why Practice Tests Matter
Even if you’re not taking the exam right away, practice tests help you:
-
Understand the structure and timing of the real test
-
Identify which subjects need more focus
-
Gain confidence through repetition
-
Improve your test-taking techniques, like elimination and time management
Many learners who use Cansego’s CAEC prep course report being ready to pass in just 6–8 weeks, even after being out of school for years.
Final Notes: No CAEC in Quebec (Yet)
-
Quebec does not currently offer the CAEC
-
Former GED testing has ended in Quebec as of May 2024
-
There is no online CAEC testing anywhere in Canada—testing must be done at official centres
-
Cansego provides online CAEC prep classes, not the exam itself
-
If the CAEC is introduced in Quebec, expect requirements similar to the GED
