Is the Prince Edward Island CAEC test free?

The GED exam was free in Prince Edward Island, and the CAEC is also offered at no cost to eligible residents. However, this should be confirmed with the provincial CAEC office or your local testing site.

To sit for the exam, you must present a valid, government-issued photo ID with a Prince Edward Island address.

Please do not use GED resources when preparing for the CAEC test, as the content is quite different. The old Canadian GED test did not reflect Canadian content, but the CAEC test is based on Canadian history, government, culture, values, and so forth.

CAEC practice test requirement

Before registering for the real Prince Edward Island CAEC test, all test-takers must:

  • Complete the official CAEC practice test
  • Achieve a passing score on each subject

This is a mandatory step before registration.
To schedule your practice test, call 1-800-446-5265 (option 3).

If you passed any GED subjects before the transition, your scores remain valid until May 2027 and may be transferred to the CAEC. You can learn more about the national transition on our Canada CAEC page.

How to prepare for the Prince Edward Island CAEC test

The CAEC is a rigorous exam, designed to assess knowledge and thinking skills at a high school graduation level. While you aren’t required to take a prep course in PEI, intense preparation is key to passing.

One of the best ways to study is with Cansego’s online CAEC prep program, which offers:

  • Bite-sized video lessons for every topic
  • Timed practice tests that mimic the real exam
  • A flexible, self-paced format
  • Content that’s fully aligned with CAEC requirements

This course is ideal for adult learners who want a fast, stress-free way to prepare, no matter how long it’s been since they were last in school.

Why taking practice tests matters

Taking regular practice tests is crucial. It helps you:

  • Learn the format and timing of each subject test
  • Identify your strong and weak points
  • Improve your confidence and study focus
  • Boost your time-management skills before the real test

If you prepare consistently—even just one hour a day—you could be ready for the CAEC in as little as two months.
