How Nunavut CAEC Test Works

As of May 3, 2024, Canada officially replaced the GED with the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC).

However, it’s important to note that the CAEC exam is currently NOT available in Nunavut.

All information below is based on how the CAEC works in other provinces and what may apply if Nunavut adopts the exam in the future.

From GED to CAEC in Canada

The GED test was discontinued across Canada, and the CAEC is now the standard high school equivalency exam in most provinces and territories. GED scores remain valid until May 2027, and in participating regions, students can apply their completed GED subjects toward the CAEC.

Nunavut’s Current Adult Learning Option: PASS Program

Nunavut offers a unique alternative through the PASS (Pathway to Adult Secondary School) program. This program allows adult learners to complete a Nunavut Secondary School Diploma—the same credential awarded through the traditional high school route.

The PASS program is designed for adults aged 19 and older who need only a few more credits to graduate. It’s a strong option for Nunavut residents seeking a recognized diploma without access to the CAEC exam.

What Happens If Nunavut Adopts the CAEC?

While Nunavut hasn’t adopted the CAEC yet, we can expect certain similarities with the former GED testing model:

  • Test-takers would need to be 19 or older
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or residency (6+ months) would likely be required
  • CAEC testing might remain paper-based only, as GED testing was not available on computers in Nunavut
  • No requirement for official prep classes or practice test scores before registration
  • Fees could mirror former GED prices: $35 per test or $175 for all five

As of now, none of this has been confirmed, so be sure to stay informed through official Nunavut education updates.

What’s on the CAEC Exam (In Other Provinces)

The CAEC exam is made up of five timed subtests, covering the following subjects:

  1. Mathematics – 90 minutes
  2. Science – 80 minutes
  3. Language Arts Reading – 65 minutes
  4. Language Arts Writing – 75 minutes for Part 1 (essay), 45 minutes for Part 2
  5. Social Studies – 70 minutes

These exams assess knowledge at the level of graduating high school students and focus on critical thinking, reading comprehension, and problem-solving.

Preparing for the CAEC – Even If It’s Not in Nunavut Yet

If Nunavut introduces the CAEC in the future, you’ll want to be ready. One of the most effective ways to prepare is by using Cansego’s Canadian online CAEC prep classes, which include:

  • Bite-sized video lessons for each topic
  • Timed practice tests to help manage time and stress
  • Content that aligns with the official CAEC format and requirements
  • A flexible, self-paced learning experience designed for adults

Even if you’re not taking the CAEC yet, these resources can help you brush up on high school-level subjects, prepare for other adult learning opportunities, or simply build confidence.

Why Practice Matters

Preparing with practice tests helps you:

  • Identify which areas need more attention
  • Build confidence with the test format and time limits
  • Create a custom study plan that works for your schedule

With daily study sessions of just one hour, many students can prepare for the full CAEC exam in as little as two months—no matter how long they’ve been out of school.

Final Thoughts on the CAEC in Nunavut

  • The CAEC exam is not currently offered in Nunavut
  • Nunavut adult learners can pursue their diploma through the PASS program
  • If the CAEC becomes available, eligibility and fees may mirror former GED guidelines
  • Cansego offers full CAEC prep classes online, ideal for those who want to be ready in advance
  • GED scores stay valid until May 2027, so check with local education offices about transferring them
