In this post, we talk a bit further about what the Newfoundland and Labrador CAEC test is all about.

The new Canadian-designed CAEC assessment is now the standard high school equivalency test across most provinces and territories, including Newfoundland and Labrador.

If you’ve completed any GED subjects before this transition, don’t worry—your scores remain valid until May 2027 and can be transferred to the CAEC.

Newfoundland and Labrador CAEC test fees

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the CAEC exam costs $30 for the complete five-test package or $6 per individual subject test. These fees are non-refundable and consistent with those used for the GED.

To register, candidates must create a CAEC account online and complete the payment before booking their exams.

A word of caution: do NOT use GED resources when preparing for the CEAC test! The new Canadian Adult Education Credential assessment is quite different.

It focuses on Canadian traditions, history, government, economics, cultures, and values that were not addressed in the former Canadian GED test.

Who can take the Newfoundland and Labrador CAEC test?

To qualify for the Newfoundland and Labrador CAEC test, you must:

  • Be at least 19 years old
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Not currently be enrolled in high school
  • Not already hold a high school diploma or equivalent

In exceptional cases, 18-year-old students may be granted permission to take the CAEC if they’ve been withdrawn from school for at least six months after their peer group graduated. This requires an age waiver from the provincial CAEC Administrator.

Newfoundland and Labrador CAEC test format

The CAEC test is modular, meaning you can take each of the five subtests individually and in any order. The five subjects are:

  1. Language Reading
  2. Language Writing
  3. Mathematics
  4. Science
  5. Social Studies

Testing is offered in both computer-based and paper-based formats, and you may combine formats if needed. For example, you can complete some tests on paper and others on a computer.

Students can take each CAEC subtest up to three times per calendar year, with a minimum of three months between the first and third attempts.

How to prepare for the CAEC test

The CAEC test assesses skills at a level similar to that of graduating high school students. It’s challenging, and preparation is key.

  • Build confidence for the real exam

Whether you’re brushing up on a few topics or starting from scratch, practice tests are a smart way to measure progress and stay on track.
