The GED is no longer offered in Canada, so if you’re preparing to earn your credential, the CAEC is now your path forward.

GED vs CAEC

If you passed one or more GED subtests prior to the switch, your scores remain valid until May 2027.

That means you may not need to retake those subjects when completing the CAEC—but it’s important to confirm this with Manitoba’s official CAEC office.

The CAEC is quite different from the former Canadian GED exam. First, it is computer-based, whereas the GED in Canada was paper-based.

The CAEC test focuses on Canadian values, history, and traditions, whereas the former GED did not include Canadian content. Therefore, it’s unwise to use GED study materials to prepare for the new CAEC test.

Manitoba CAEC test fees

The full CAEC test in Manitoba costs $75, or $15 per subject test. These fees are the same as those previously applied to GED testing and are non-refundable. Test-takers may sit for the exam up to three times per calendar year.

Manitoba CAEC test eligibility requirements

To write the CAEC test in Manitoba, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be a resident of Manitoba
  • Be at least 19 years old
  • Not currently enrolled in high school
  • Not already hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Check here -> for more information on CAEC qualification requirements

In exceptional cases, home-schooled students aged 17 or 18 may be eligible if they meet additional criteria. Contact the Manitoba CAEC Testing Office for details.

How the Manitoba CAEC test works

The CAEC consists of five independent subtests that assess academic knowledge and critical thinking in the following areas:

  1. Language Reading
  2. Language Writing
  3. Mathematics (Part I and II)
  4. Social Studies
  5. Science

The total test time is approximately 7.5 hours, but because the exam is modular, you can take each subtest one at a time and in any order.

Manitoba CAEC test format

In Manitoba, the CAEC test is currently offered only in paper-based format. While most provinces offer computer-based testing, that option is not available in Manitoba at this time. Be sure to confirm this with your testing centre.

The test is offered in English and French, depending on location.
