The CAEC (Canadian Adult Education Credential) is a challenging exam that replaced the Canadian GED exam in 2024 as Canada’s high school equivalency exam.

The CAEC assesses adults’ foundational knowledge at a level comparable to that of high school students upon graduation.

The exam does so through five independent subtests covering math, science, social studies, language writing, and language reading.

Get Good Study Materials

Practice extensively with sample tests to become familiar with the question format. Practice tests also help you identify your academic strengths and weaknesses.

If you know which subject areas to focus on, your learning will be more efficient, but ensure that your resources are aligned with the latest CAEC version.

We advise you to use resources from reputable academic institutions and organizations, as well as practice tests and study guides designed specifically for the Canadian CAEC exam.

Develop an Effective Study Plan

The five CAEC subtests are timed tests, so allocate a specific time slot for your mock tests for each of the five subject areas.

Be sure, however, to divide your preparation into segments appropriate to your level and needs to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

The CAEC assesses basic knowledge, but, as noted earlier, there’s also significant emphasis on critical and analytical thinking, so ensure you are familiar with these aspects as well.

Canadian Armed Forces enlistees can also benefit from earning a CAEC if they didn’t complete high school. They can earn a CAEC or use other options within the first five years of service, with significant support from the CAF.

Know the CAEC Content

The CAEC exam contains substantial content on the Canadian government, culture, history, values, and economics.

Get familiar with everything you are expected to know and understand. This is one of the reasons we strongly advise against using GED study materials.

The CAEC exam must be taken (in most provinces) on a computer, so be sure to practice extensively with computer-based CAEC testing and, on test day, have your CAEC login information and IDs ready.

For the Social Studies subtest, you need to know where the five Great Lakes are located, how the Canadian voting system works, and what the key factors are for the Canadian economy.

Take Many Practice Tests

As noted earlier, taking numerous full-length CAEC practice tests is key to success, and try to do so under the same timed conditions as on the actual exam.

Again, taking mock tests allows you to identify the areas that require your attention most. Once you know that, your learning will become more effective.

Taking lots of CAEC practice tests will get you accustomed to the formats of the questions on the exam. If you know what to expect on test day, you will be more self-assured on the actual test.

You can take each of the five CAEC sub-exams once per calendar month for a maximum of three (3) times per calendar year.

So, to avoid disappointment and delays, we strongly advise you to be optimally prepared, and each attempt will incur the testing fees again!

Consider Joining a Prep Class

Several testing centres offer CAEC prep classes that will help you get optimally prepared for the challenging CAEC exam.

Many students perform better if they learn under the supervision of a CAEC teacher, so if that applies to you, contact a prep facility in your area and join a CAEC prep class.
