Yes, as of May 3, 2024, the Canadian GED test has officially been replaced by the CAEC or Canadian Adult Education Credential.

This diploma holds the same value as a traditional high school diploma and is accepted by employers, colleges, and universities.
The CAEC (pronounced “cake”) is a made-in-Canada assessment developed with input from Canadian education experts and institutions to better serve adult learners across the country.
Please note: Cansego offers online prep classes to help students prepare for the CAEC, but we do not administer the CAEC test or handle registration.
Canadian GED to CAEC – Key Facts
- The GED test in Canada was discontinued on May 3, 2024, and replaced by the CAEC.
- GED scores remain valid and can be transferred to the CAEC for three years, until May 3, 2027.
- Cansego provides online CAEC prep classes and regularly updates its content to reflect the latest standards.
- All participating provinces now use the CAEC as the pathway for adult learners to earn their high school equivalency diploma.
- To register for the CAEC, students must create an account at Vretta.com.
- Cansego does not offer the actual CAEC exam—only preparation.
GED Test Scores Remain Valid
If you’ve already passed one or more GED subtests, your results are still valid. You can apply them to the new CAEC credential until May 2027. Both the CAEC and GED will continue to be recognized as equivalent high school diplomas by schools and employers across Canada.

What Is the CAEC?
The CAEC is a Canadian-designed, computer-based exam that awards a High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma. The test includes five subject areas, just like the GED:
- Language Reading
- Language Writing
- Mathematics (Part I without calculator, Part II with calculator)
- Social Studies
- Science
The CAEC is available in English and French and is designed to reflect Canada’s diverse perspectives, including Indigenous content and Canadian culture.
CAEC vs. GED
While the GED was an important stepping stone for adult learners, Canada now has a homegrown alternative that better reflects its population and values.
- The CAEC test is digitally delivered, with some options available for paper-based testing, depending on your location.
- It covers the same subject areas as the GED.
- The CAEC test offers updated content, including an inclusive curriculum that focuses on Canadian diversity.

Why Canada Created a New Program
When GED Testing Service®—based in the U.S.—decided to stop offering the GED in Canada in 2024, Canadian provinces needed a new solution. Unlike the U.S. version, Canada was still using the 2002 GED, which was paper-based only.
To meet current standards and expectations, Canada launched its own High School Equivalency program, the CAEC, which is now being rolled out nationwide.
Where Is the CAEC Available?
As of now, the CAEC is available in:
- Alberta
- Ontario
- New Brunswick
- Manitoba
- Northwest Territories
- Prince Edward Island
- Nova Scotia
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Saskatchewan
The CAEC is not available in:
- British Columbia (uses the Adult Dogwood program)
- Quebec (no CAEC implementation announced)
- Nunavut (not participating in CAEC)
- Yukon (follows B.C.’s approach)
CAEC Availability by Province
- Alberta:
- Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and others:
- British Columbia: Continues with the Adult Dogwood program
- Quebec and Nunavut: No plans to implement CAEC at this time
- Yukon: Following British Columbia’s lead, not implementing CAEC
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take the CAEC test in a different province?
No. You must take the CAEC test in the province or territory where you live. Testing centres will ask for ID that proves your residency.
Does Cansego provide the CAEC test?
No. Cansego provides online prep classes, not the exam. The test is administered by official CAEC testing centres in each province.
How do I schedule the CAEC test?
You must create an account on the CAEC website at www.caec.ccea.ca and follow the steps to book your test. Cansego is not part of this process.
