In Calgary—as well as throughout Alberta—students now take the CAEC test instead of the GED.
As of May 3, 2024, the GED was officially phased out across most of Canada and replaced by the CAEC—the Canadian Adult Education Credential.

That’s why it’s essential not to use GED prep materials when preparing for the CAEC exam.
If you live in Calgary and want to earn your high school equivalency diploma, the CAEC is the test you need to take. Below, we explain how it works and what you need to know to get started.
What is the Calgary CAEC test?
The Calgary CAEC test is made up of five separate subtests, each focusing on a key academic subject:
- Language Reading
- Language Writing
- Mathematics (Part 1: no calculator, Part 2: calculator allowed)
- Science
- Social Studies
You can take the five subtests one at a time, in any order, and the exam is computer-based with a paper-based option.
Who can take the Calgary CAEC test?
To qualify for the Calgary CAEC Test, you must meet Alberta’s high school equivalency requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old (or 17 with special approval)
- Be an Alberta resident
- Have been out of school for at least 10 months
- Not already hold a high school diploma or equivalent
If you’re under 18 or have unique circumstances, contact your local test centre or CAEC administrator for guidance.

Is a prep course required?
No, you’re not required to take a prep course or pass a practice test before taking the Calgary CAEC Test. However, the exam is challenging, and students who prepare in advance perform much better.
